Current Training

Since I started this blog today, I am only including the training I have done beginning today. (Who wants to live in the past?) I am actually loosely working with the Hal Higdon 10k Intermediate plan. I say "loosely" because I have had to work around my school schedule as well as deal with general life interruptions! In some training sessions I do more than is asked for here, and in others I do slightly less. Also, I have longer long runs in the beginning since I don't want to lose the fitness I already have.
My pre-marathon training will end June 16th, at which point I am given a one week recovery before beginning the 18 week Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 Marathon plan which you can see by clicking here

My workouts will be in "reverse" order, with the most recent workout first, followed by past workouts. (I'm trying to save you the time from scrolling!)  Alright, lets go!

I have had so many things to try to keep up with that I have not updated my training log here. I can assure you that I have been training! I am still learning to keep a paper journal and many times it just doesn't transfer to anything electronic. I picked up triathlon training which I think will benefit and compliment my marathon training. Swimming has already helped to build my lungs and I am feeling the benefits in my running. My speed training is getting better which I attribute to swimming. Adding thr bike has helped to add in "doubles" to my workouts so that I have a low impact workout which not only improves my lungs but streathens my legs where they are weak. I am starting to question my decision to train for a full marathon during the summer. I have done a half marathon for the last 3 years in the fall and my only full was in the spring. This summer training is not easy! But wait a second... I teach kindergarten, I can do anything!!!!!!

Today I had the chance to run in South Dakota! Tyler's brother got married yesterday so we flew out for the wedding. My trip was very short. I was in the state of South Dakota for less than 24 hours before heading back to North Carolina. On the morning we were headed home, I went out and did a quick 3 mile run. It was very foggy and a bit misty but I wanted to be able to have a run recorded on my Garmin from the state. I wondered why I felt winded after only a half a mile when I began to realize that I was not running at the 50 feet above sea level that I am used to! According to several sites online, I was only approximately 1550 feet above sea level but it felt like 5000! The highlights for this run were the plethora of worms attempting to cross the road, and the military jets taking off. I will admit that I stopped to watch the planes to take off. I also ran my fastest mile while watching the airplanes!

Today was National Running Day! I began by walking a shelter dog at the Pitt County Animal Shelter. I knew I had to run but the dog I had was not of the running kind and I was thankful for that, as hot as it was. I was committed to still running though so went out later in the evening to Tucker Estates to run a few miles. I am traveling this weekend and Im not sure I will get in another run until I land in South Dakota.

"I love running in the heat and humidity!" said no runner ever. Or no runner I know of. Or that anyone knows for that matter. The point is, no one in their right mind loves this kind of misery. I am thankful to the church on 14th and Evans that ran their sprinklers during my run. I stopped on my way out and back to "play" in the sprinkler. I didnt care that cars were looking at me. All I cared about was the fact that I was cooling off and it didnt matter who was looking. Once I began running again the light wind blew across my skin and I felt cool.... for about a half a mile when the water was replaced with sweat. Again. I went out hoping for 6 miles and came back after 5. Oh well... still successful.

Who just ran three miles in 88 degree temps and high humidity? That would be me. First mile was pretty good but had to work out the normal aches and pains that go along with being a runner. Sometimes I have to remind myself of the quote from GI Jane, "You know the great thing about pain? It means you're not dead yet!" Or something like that. The next two miles were average and uneventful... minus the cop car that was  trying to pull someone over who apparently disagreed with his reasoning. That was sorta funny...Good 'ol greenville... Man, You know it's hot when even after a shower you're still sweating! I have to thank Katy Perry for getting me through that heat... My face is so red I look like I'm embarrassed. And now I gotta hit the pool..... Connerton - OUT!!

Today was a rest day so that is exactly what I did! After school, I met my 5ks4k9s group for a walk with the shelter dogs. I walked about a mile and a half with my shelter dog, Candy. After running sprints yesterday I didn't want to push anything by running hard today. Dinner was a cold sub from Sheetz with a side of cooling off in the pool while reading Running For My Life by Lopez Lomong. Today was a beautiful day!

Ran a "HITS" (High Intensity Training Session) workout with Gina and Mary. Warmed up about half mile and did 6 sprint repeats with a slow run recovery between each one. Sprints were just over 100 meters and I clocked the following times:
7:05, 6:49, 6:37, 6:43, 6:32, 7:10 (it took everything I had to finish that last one!) I was happy to have Gina pushing me through this workout! Although 100s will not help me much for the marathon, this is a great place for me to start. Last week I did 400s on the street I live on which is perfect because the street is just over three tenths so there is enough space to run in order to slow down so I am not sprinting into traffic (because that just wouldn't be a good thing!)

Six mile long run with Gina. Ran in Tucker Estates at 7pm. Amazing weather! Low temps and low humidity! Can we have weather like this more often??? Averaged 10:15 pace with the last mile in 9:43. I know you're thinking "that's slow" but I assure you that it's not since this is a long run. When runners do their long run they run long runs at approximately 60-90 seconds below goal pace. In all honestly this is actually too fast, as I do not have any intentions of running my marathon at 8:45 - 9:15 pace. But wouldn't that be sweet? To qualify for Boston I would have to run something like 8:10 pace... Pfff....
